Tooth Extraction

Tooth extractions don’t have to be stressful when you have a trusted dental team to work with. At James Blake, DDS, our priority is ensuring your comfort and exceptional experience at our Hamburg dental office, even during a complex procedure like a tooth extraction.

Our goal at James Blake, DDS, is to help you maintain your natural teeth for as long as possible. That’s why our dentists only recommend removing a tooth after all other treatment options have been explored.

Our team goes above and beyond to support you throughout your tooth extraction procedure and even beyond into your recovery.

What Are the Benefits of a Tooth Extraction?

When a tooth is unsalvageable, it’s time to remove it. While removing a tooth may feel daunting, there are several benefits to a tooth extraction procedure that you should be aware of.
Pain Relief
Removing a tooth can eliminate your immediate pain and discomfort by stopping an infection.
Stops Infection
A tooth extraction can immediately alleviate a tooth infection and prevent it from spreading.
Protects Oral Health
Removing an infected tooth protects surrounding teeth from further damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Recovery time from a tooth extraction varies depending on the complexity of the procedure, but most patients feel significantly better within three to seven days. Simple extractions typically heal faster, while surgical extractions or wisdom tooth removals may require up to two weeks for complete healing.

Take Care After Oral Surgery

During the first 24 hours, it's normal to experience some bleeding, swelling, and discomfort. This is when blood clot formation is crucial, as the clot protects the extraction site and promotes healing. Avoid disturbing it by not rinsing vigorously, drinking through straws, or touching the area with your tongue.

For the first few days, choose soft foods like yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, or applesauce. Clean the extraction site by carefully rinsing with warm salt water after the first 24 hours. Apply ice packs to reduce swelling, and take any prescribed or recommended pain medication.

Most patients can return to normal activities within a day or two, though you should avoid strenuous exercise for at least 48 hours. The extraction site will continue healing beneath the surface for several weeks, with complete bone healing taking three to six months.

When Do We Recommend a Tooth Extraction?

Our dentists will consider if your damaged, decayed, or infected tooth poses a threat to neighboring teeth, your oral health, and your overall well-being. They may recommend a tooth extraction in these situations:

  • Severe Infection — When a tooth is infected beyond what a root canal can repair, it may be unsalvageable.
  • Advanced Gum Disease — Periodontitis, or advanced gum disease, destroys the gums and bone that support a tooth, resulting in tooth loss.
  • Wisdom Teeth — There are several reasons our dentists may suggest removing wisdom teeth, or third molars.
  • Damage or Decay — If a tooth is cracked, fractured, or damaged beyond repair, an extraction is recommended.

Do I Need My Wisdom Teeth Extracted?

Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth, or third molars, extracted. Our dentists use x-rays, photos, and a thorough exam to determine whether you would benefit from having your wisdom teeth removed. Here are some of the reasons we recommend extracting wisdom teeth.

Tooth Crowding — If there’s not enough room for your wisdom teeth, they may crowd your teeth, cause misalignment, and ruin previous orthodontic treatment.
Brushing and Flossing — Third molars can be hard to reach due to their location at the back of your mouth. If you can’t brush and floss them properly, you may be more susceptible to developing problems like tooth decay and gum disease.
Impaction — If your wisdom teeth are impacted or stuck underneath the gumline, you could be more susceptible to developing an infection.
Damage to Neighboring Teeth — Third molars sometimes arrive at odd angles, which could be detrimental to surrounding teeth.

Tooth Extraction Technology

Panoramic X-Ray

Panoramic x-rays provide a comprehensive view of your entire mouth in a single, painless scan. At James Blake, DDS, we use this essential diagnostic tool to capture a view of all your teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures at once.

Panoramic imaging is invaluable for detecting decay, bone loss, impacted teeth, and other conditions that individual x-rays might miss. The quick, comfortable procedure requires minimal radiation exposure, making it ideal for routine checkups and comprehensive treatment planning.
