Tooth-Colored Fillings

These days, when tooth decay strikes, you no longer have to compromise the aesthetics of your tooth or your dental health with a metal filling. Tooth-colored composite resin is a durable and aesthetically pleasing alternative to the metal amalgam fillings used in the past.

Understanding Tooth Decay

Did you know that in many situations, cavities could’ve been prevented? Understanding how tooth decay happens can help you avoid cavities and the need for dental treatment.

Most of us associate sugar with tooth decay; however, sugar is just the fuel for the bacteria that cause it. The bacteria feed on sugar and then produce acid as a byproduct. It is the acid that eats away at tooth enamel, causing cavities and other damage to your teeth.

Avoiding sugary foods and beverages helps starve the bacteria of their fuel. Removing the plaque on your teeth, where bacteria live, through daily brushing and flossing also disrupts the pattern of tooth decay and enamel destruction.

Now that you understand the process, you can take steps to protect your smile with preventive care and a consistent and effective home care routine.

What Are the Benefits of Composite Fillings?

Tooth-colored composite fillings offer advantages beyond aesthetics, which our patients appreciate.

A composite filling preserves more of your natural tooth structure during placement than a metal filling.
Direct Bonding Strengthens
Composite resin material bonds directly to your tooth, providing strength and durability.
Invisible Treatment
Our dentists can customize composite resin to seamlessly match your tooth for excellent aesthetics.

Getting a Composite Filling

Tooth-colored dental fillings in Hamburg are a straightforward treatment that we can typically complete during one dental appointment. Here’s how the process works:

  • Numbing the Area — Dr. Blake or Dr. Guth will ensure you don’t feel anything during your procedure by numbing the area around the compromised tooth.
  • Decay Removal — Next, our dentist removes the decayed areas of the tooth while preserving as much healthy tooth structure as possible.
  • Preparation — Then, we etch the tooth to prepare it for the adhesion of the composite resin material.
  • Composite Application — Our dentists find a custom shade of the composite resin, apply it to your tooth, and then cure and harden it with a special light.
  • Smoothing and Finishing — Finally, they smooth and shape the composite resin, polishing it to a fine finish that blends flawlessly with your tooth.
  • Final Adjustments — When the composite filling is completed, our dentists will make any necessary adjustments to ensure that you can bite and chew food comfortably and effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cavities don't always announce themselves, which is why regular dental checkups are so important! That said, there are some signs you can watch for at home.

Visual and Physical Signs

The most obvious indicator is a visible dark spot or hole in your tooth. You might notice brown, black, or chalky-looking areas on the surface of your teeth. Sometimes cavities appear as discoloration around the edges of old fillings.

Pain and Sensitivity

If you experience sharp pain when biting down, sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks, or a persistent ache in a specific tooth, a cavity could be the culprit. However, not all cavities cause pain. Early-stage cavities are often painless, which means you might have one without realizing it.

Other Clues

Sometimes you'll notice a sticky feeling in a specific spot, or you might get food caught repeatedly in the same place. Bad breath or an unpleasant taste can also indicate decay developing.

What You Should Do

If you notice any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible. Early detection makes treatment simpler and less invasive. However, don't wait for symptoms. Many cavities are discovered during routine exams before you ever feel anything wrong.

The best strategy is prevention: brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, limit sugar intake, and visit us biannually. That way, we can catch any problems early and keep your smile healthy and strong!
