Cleanings and Exams

One of the best ways to protect your family’s smiles is to attend routine teeth cleanings and exams every six months with your Hamburg dentist. These visits are designed to monitor your oral health, raise awareness of any concerns as early as possible, and remove the plaque and bacteria that cause common problems like tooth decay and gum disease.

What to Expect During Your Professional Dental Cleaning

During your preventive teeth cleaning, our hygienists gently remove the plaque and bacteria buildup that’s left behind after your home care routine. Plaque and bacteria contribute to problems like tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. Effectively removing plaque and bacteria each day protects your smile from these concerns.

Here’s what happens during your routine teeth cleaning with your hygienist:

  • Remove plaque buildup
  • Floss between teeth
  • Polish teeth and remove surface stains
  • Review products and techniques that improve home care

Your dental hygienist is an excellent resource for information about proper brushing techniques and products, such as an antibacterial mouth rinse or water flosser, that could help make your home care routine more efficient and effective.

What to Expect During Your Routine Dental Exam

Dr. Blake or Dr. Guth will provide a thorough dental exam at every bi-annual preventive dental appointment. Our team also takes x-rays once a year so our dentists can take an internal look at your oral health.

During your exam, our dentists screen you for problems like early signs of tooth decay and gum disease. We also check the health of your current restorations, such as dental fillings or crowns, looking for signs of wear or breakdown that may indicate problems. Detecting these concerns early allows you to treat problems with less invasive, less costly procedures, saving you time in the dental chair and money in your budget.

We will also screen you for oral cancer during your exam. This disease is often hard to spot on your own, and early detection is key to a better prognosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

X-rays are an essential diagnostic tool, but you don't necessarily need them at every preventive cleaning appointment. The frequency depends on your individual oral health needs, dental history, and risk factors.

When You Need Dental X-Rays

For most adult patients with good oral health, we typically recommend dental x-rays once every one to two years. However, if you're experiencing specific dental issues, have a history of cavities or gum disease, or are a new patient, we may suggest x-rays more frequently to establish a comprehensive baseline or monitor developing conditions.

Children and teenagers often require x-rays more frequently than adults because their mouths are still growing and developing. X-rays help us monitor tooth eruption, detect cavities between teeth, and identify potential orthodontic concerns early.

The Importance of Dental X-Rays

The reason x-rays are so valuable is simple: they reveal what we can't see during a visual examination. They can detect cavities forming between teeth, bone loss from gum disease, infections at the tooth root, impacted teeth, and other hidden problems. Catching these issues early often means simpler, less expensive treatment.

We understand some patients have concerns about radiation exposure. Today's digital x-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film x-rays, often up to 90 percent less, making them extremely safe.

At James Blake, DDS in Hamburg, we carefully evaluate each patient's needs and only recommend x-rays when clinically necessary. We'll always explain why we're suggesting x-rays and answer any questions you have. Our goal is to provide thorough, personalized care that keeps your smile healthy for years to come!
