Second Opinions in Hamburg, NY

When you visit the dentist for a routine exam and cleaning, you’re hoping to hear that your teeth and gums are healthy and that you don’t need any further treatment, right? But the truth is that the day may come when you need more than a preventive visit to keep your smile looking and feeling its best.

At James M. Blake, DDS, we understand that dental terminology can be confusing and you may not know what to do when presented with a complicated and costly treatment plan. That’s why we offer second opinions to residents of Hamburg and the surrounding area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental implants are the gold standard and are ideal for replacing missing teeth, offering a permanent, natural-looking restoration that functions just like your own teeth. Many people are surprised to learn they're good candidates for this life-changing treatment!

Are Dental Implants Right for You?

Generally, ideal candidates for dental implants are adults who have lost one or multiple teeth due to trauma or injury, decay, or gum disease, and want a long-term replacement option. You'll need adequate jawbone density to support the implant, as the titanium post fuses with your bone to create a stable foundation. If bone loss has occurred, bone grafting procedures can often rebuild the area to make implant placement possible.

Good overall health is essential for successful implant placement and healing. Conditions like uncontrolled diabetes, active gum disease, or certain autoimmune disorders may affect healing and implant success, though many of these can be managed with proper treatment and medical collaboration.

These are some of the situations when our dentists may recommend tooth implants:

  • Have one or multiple missing teeth and desire a permanent solution
  • Have adequate jawbone density or are willing to undergo a bone grafting procedure to rebuild your jawbone if needed
  • Maintain good oral hygiene habits and are committed to regular dental care
  • Have healthy gums or are willing to treat any existing gum disease first
  • Don't use tobacco products or smoke, or are willing to quit, as smoking significantly impacts implant success rates
  • Are in generally good health with well-managed conditions

Age isn't typically a barrier—we've successfully placed implants in patients from young adults to seniors.

Why Get a Second Opinion?

You shouldn’t feel bad about seeking a second opinion regarding your dental care; it’s important to be your own advocate and ask questions before agreeing to any dental procedures:

Here are some of the reasons why talking to another dentist could be beneficial:

  • Different levels of training and experience — Your dentist may not have the training and experience to make you feel confident in their ability to perform certain difficult procedures. By seeking a second opinion from a dentist with decades of experience, it could lead to choosing a different dental office.
  • Technological offerings — If you need a complicated procedure, you want a dental office that utilizes the latest technology. Finding a different dentist and asking about how they can streamline your treatment and keep you comfortable is an important step. Our office uses digital and panoramic x-rays, CBCT cone beam technology, intraoral cameras, and CEREC® same-day restorations.
  • Peace of mind — Seeking a second opinion can make you feel better about committing to certain treatments. It’s always best to have two opinions regarding your oral health. So, if you’re feeling uncertain, please don’t hesitate to call our office. We will put your mind at ease so you can sleep at night.
  • Budgetary concerns — Even if you have dental insurance, certain procedures can be expensive. When you get a second opinion, you can compare costs and make the best decision for your unique situation. In addition to traditional payment methods, our office works with CareCredit financing, making it possible to make payments over time.
