For most patients, we recommend visiting the dentist every six months for a preventive cleaning and comprehensive examination. This twice-yearly schedule has become the standard of care because it allows us to monitor your oral health, catch potential problems early, and keep your teeth and gums in optimal condition.
Dental Care Personalized for Your Needs
Regular dental visits are about much more than just cleaning your teeth. During these appointments, we thoroughly examine your mouth for signs of cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and other concerns that may not cause noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Early detection means simpler, more affordable treatment and better long-term oral health outcomes.
Professional cleanings remove hardened plaque and tartar that regular brushing and flossing can't eliminate. Even with excellent home care, these deposits accumulate over time and can lead to cavities and gum disease if not professionally removed.
When You Need Additional Support
However, six months isn't right for everyone. Your individual needs may require more frequent visits. Patients with gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, diabetes, weakened immune systems, or those who smoke often benefit from appointments every three to four months. Conversely, some patients with excellent oral health and low risk factors might do well with annual visits, though this is less common.
Factors that may require more frequent visits include:
- Active gum disease or a history of periodontal treatment
- High cavity risk or frequent dental problems
- Diabetes or other systemic health conditions
- Pregnancy, which can affect oral health
- Orthodontic treatment or extensive dental work
