Frequently Asked Questions

The good news is that dental crowns are designed to be durable and functional, allowing you to enjoy most of your favorite foods! Modern crowns are strong and can withstand normal chewing forces. However, taking a few simple precautions will help protect your investment and ensure your crown lasts for many years.

Protecting Your Crown Investment

While your crown is incredibly resilient, certain foods can potentially damage it or cause discomfort, especially during the first few days after placement. It's wise to be mindful of what you eat and how you eat it.

Foods and habits to avoid or approach with caution:

  • Hard foods like ice, hard candy, and popcorn kernels — These can crack or chip your crown, just as they can damage natural teeth. Avoid chewing on ice cubes or biting down directly into hard foods.
  • Sticky or chewy foods such as caramel, taffy, and gummy candies — These can potentially dislodge a crown, particularly if the cement bond has weakened over time.
  • Very hot or very cold foods immediately after crown placement — You may experience temporary sensitivity while your tooth adjusts to the new crown.
  • Using your teeth as tools — Never use your tooth crown to open packages, crack nuts, or bite your nails, as this can cause damage.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A bridge is a tooth replacement option for one or multiple adjacent missing teeth. It anchors dental crowns to healthy teeth, which support a prosthetic tooth or teeth in between.

Dental bridges may be an excellent option for those patients who aren’t candidates for or don’t want to undergo implant surgery.

How Does CEREC Technology Work?

CEREC stands for “chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramic.” With CEREC technology, our dentists will scan a 3-D image of your compromised tooth, which allows them to design your new restoration.

Our CEREC milling machine fabricates your new restoration while you wait, and our dentists will fit and permanently place it during the same appointment.

When Do We Recommend a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is designed to cover a severely damaged or compromised tooth, restoring its form and structure for optimal chewing function, and mimicking its shade for aesthetics that blend seamlessly into your smile. This is the restoration we choose when a tooth’s damage is beyond the scope of what a dental filling can repair.

Our dentists may suggest a crown in these situations:

  • To repair a cracked, fractured, or broken tooth
  • To replace a large broken filling
  • To cover a tooth with cosmetic concerns, like size or shape discrepancies
  • To rebuild a tooth that’s had root canal treatment
  • To top a dental implant as a single tooth replacement
  • To restore an excessively worn tooth

CEREC technology allows us to complete your crown during one visit to our Hamburg dental office.
