How do you clean and care for a dental bridge?

If you are new to the dental bridge or are considering this prosthetic to fill in for missing teeth, you likely have questions, such as:

  • How do I clean my dental bridge?
  • How do I promote bridge longevity?

Fortunately, I can help answer these questions.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a one-piece prosthetic consisting of a replacement tooth or teeth situated between dental crowns.

I customize this dental crown, including tooth color and shape, to ensure it looks natural. I also prepare the teeth on either side of your smile gap for the dental crowns. Then, I cap these teeth, which allows the bridge to close the gap in your smile.

In some cases, patients opt for an implant bridge, which means I secure the bridge to the jaw using a dental implant.

Cleaning a Dental Bridge

Cleaning your dental bridge requires a bit more time during your oral hygiene routine.

Here are my recommendations:

  • Brush your bridge with a special cleaning brush to prevent buildup and stains.
  • Clear the area beneath the bridge (at the gumline) with a water flosser or a threader.
  • Rinse with a gentle mouthwash to clear debris on the go.

Ways to Promote Bridge Longevity

Bridge longevity depends on the prosthetic’s strength and stability, as well as your oral health.

I recommend not biting into sticky foods with your crowns or bridge.

It’s important to establish excellent oral hygiene to avoid gum disease, which can make it difficult or impossible to wear your bridge.

You should also report any changes in oral health or in bridge/crown fit to my dental office right away.
